Hollesley, Bawdsey and East lane 08.10.23

Started at Hollesley first thing, the fall of thrush's didn't seem to have happened here, flushed 3 Redwing out of the trees on the edge of oak hill, a few more black birds down the road and a single Song Thrush was it. Did a circular of Hollesley but it was disappointingly quiet, 4 Green sand in the ditches was it really. The sea looked really good but the hazy and sun made it impossible to identify anything, there was a mass movement of what looked like Brent Geese but they were on the horizon so could have been Cormorant or so i felt at the time, i now know they were Brent geese, close to 10000 i recon. Passerines were evident too. Other Wildfowl were moving south over the sea, Closer Brent Geese, Pintails, Teal and lots of Wigeon with some Shoveler. Back at the car-park a dozen Chaffinch over but luckily the 1 bird not silent was a Brambling.

Had lunch at Bawdsey Key and immediately noticed a difference in birds with many Redwing coming out the trees. Siskin were in smaller numbers and a single Brambling. On the river 6 Sandwich Tern are late, 200 Dunlin in the area, 3 Great Crested Grebes, handfuls of Avocets and Bar tailed Godwits.

Finally had a couple of hours seawatching off East lane. Very successful too, the Brent geese were still on the move with another 5500, 4 Greylag geese made me think these were real birds not the feral stuff.  4 Short eared owl were nice with 2 going south together. Other birds mixed in with the geese were 28 Shelduck, 19 Red Throated Diver, 1 Adult winter Med Gull, 15 Sanderling 37 Dunlin, 3 Curlew, 1290 Wigeon, 35 Pintail, 180 Teal, 19 Common Scoter, 2 Rock Pipit, and a nice surprise were 4 Porpoise.

So not a bad day and i love seeing migration in action, but felt i deserved better with something scarce.
